How Do I File an OSHA Complaint?

If your workplace has a serious hazard or your employer is ignoring safety rules, you have a federal right to report it and ask OSHA to inspect — and to do it confidentially.

What the Law Says

You can file a safety and health complaint and request an OSHA inspection if you believe there is a serious hazard or your employer is not following OSHA standards. There are several ways to file:

• Online through OSHA’s complaint form.
• By phone — call your local OSHA office or 800-321-OSHA (6742).
• By mail, fax, or email to your local OSHA office.

Your identity can be protected. When you request confidentiality, OSHA will not tell your employer who filed the complaint.

OSHA prioritizes complaints by danger: an imminent danger (immediate risk of death or serious harm) is the top priority, followed by fatalities and catastrophes. For less urgent issues, OSHA may contact the employer by phone/letter to address the hazard quickly.

An Everyday Example

You notice a machine missing a required guard and your employer brushes it off. You can file a complaint online or call 800-321-OSHA, describe the hazard, and check the box requesting confidentiality so your name is not shared with your employer.

What This Means for You

You do not have to live with a serious workplace hazard. You can report it confidentially and request an inspection, and if an inspector comes, you have the right to speak with them privately. Reporting is also protected activity — your employer cannot legally punish you for it.
