Student
A student's rights at school.
What To Do
You can decline to consent to a search of your bag or phone.
If police question you, stay calm and ask for a parent and a lawyer.
Do not run, resist, or sign anything without help.
Your Rights
School officials can search you only on reasonable suspicion (New Jersey v. T.L.O.).
Taking your phone is not the same as searching what's on it.
You keep First Amendment rights — schools can't punish your viewpoint.
If police question you, your age counts for Miranda (J.D.B. v. North Carolina).
You Can Say
"I do not consent to a search."
"I want to remain silent and talk to my parent and a lawyer."
Based on: 4th Amendment (searches) · 5th Amendment (silence) · New Jersey v. T.L.O. (1985)
Educational only — not legal advice.
