Protest
Your First Amendment rights at a protest.
What To Do
Stay on public sidewalks, streets, and parks — your strongest ground.
Keep building entrances and traffic clear; stay peaceful.
Film openly, at a reasonable distance, without interfering.
If police give a lawful dispersal order, move; failing to can be a separate offense.
Stay calm — do not resist, even if you believe an arrest is wrong.
Your Rights
You can protest in public forums without a permit if you don't block traffic.
Police cannot shut down a protest just for being loud or unpopular.
You have the right to record police in public.
If arrested: you have the right to remain silent and to a lawyer.
You Can Say
"I am exercising my First Amendment right to protest."
"Officer, am I free to go?"
"I am exercising my right to remain silent. I want a lawyer."
Based on: 1st Amendment (speech & assembly) · 5th & 6th Amendments (silence & counsel)
Educational only — not legal advice.
